Spiritual Direction
Offering companionship and presence as you engage your life and spiritual journey
Sometimes life leaves us reeling, whether from something like a health crisis, shifting relationships, or unexpected change. Other times, there seems to be a slow drain on our heart and hope. We may begin to wonder about ourselves, God, and the purpose, meaning, or values that we once connected with. These can be lonely seasons, with the way forward seeming murky at best. Spiritual direction offers a place for connection, solace, and safety to be where you are, to say what needs said, and to move towards flourishing.
Components of Spiritual Direction
Slow
A spiritual direction session will follow a slower rhythm than an everyday conversation. There are pauses and times of silence that allow distractions to fall away.
Speaking
Spiritual direction is a place for you to bring whatever is on your heart. This could be recent events, ideas you are wrestling with, or emotions you are experiencing. There is unhurried time for you to express whatever needs to be acknowledged.
Listening
The use of the word 'direction' can paint a picture of a client being given answers or told what to do. Instead, together we will listen attentively for sparks of life and God as we consider where or how to go from 'here'.
Open
Spiritual direction is a place for you to get in touch with yourself and the God who is there with you. What that looks like and how that plays out is as individual as each human being.
Invested
Though awareness of and connection to ourselves and the Voice of Love is something we long to access all the time, it often grows through practice. In spiritual direction we invest our time, attention, and our selves to the process.
"Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.”

A bit about me
Hello! I'm Sharlin, and I'm happy to have you here exploring the possibility of spiritual direction!
I spend a good bit of my days caring for myself, my family, our dog, Teddy, and our little house in the woods. I'm drawn to people and their stories, and love to engage them in books, music, friendship and spiritual direction.
Noticing beauty became a necessity in life during my journey with cancer, and I find it consistently in my houseplants, fashion, homemaking and nature. I feel whole when I get to travel and explore, and I sense God most keenly in things like songs that are achingly alive; where pain, raw honesty and questions show up together with a hungering sense of hope.
I'm a certified spiritual director, trained through Fall Creek Abbey, School of Spiritual Direction. I've walked through excruciating seasons of personal loss and change as well as disillusionment with God, faith and community. Through these drought-like stretches and beyond, I've been deeply cared for and seen in the context of spiritual direction. I'm delighted to offer others that same kind of companionship.
Grounded in the Christian faith and seeking to follow Jesus, I welcome anyone. I am available to meet one on one, in person or online, and to serve as resident spiritual director at your retreat event.
